Job seekers assume the summertime is not a good time to look for a job – those with decent severance packages assume they might as well take the summer off and those with no severance are anxious to figure out how they will make it to September. The dearth of job postings and newspaper ads seems to reinforce the assumption especially during the holiday weekends when newspapers have almost no ads.
As a former Corporate HR executive, I can tell you the reason there are no advertisements on the holiday weekends is because experience taught us all the job seekers would be on the beach and not looking at the papers. Our needs did not go away those weekends and, in the days of newspaper advertising (pre job boards), we had to hustle to place our ads the week prior or wait two weeks before we could advertise our needs.
So, there is no reason your job search campaign cannot be as productive in July and August as the rest of the year. Another indication is that most of the networking groups for job seekers which used to stop running meetings in the summer now run all year.
And speaking of networking, many of the executives you would like to network with are easier to meet in the summer when business travel often slows down and is a much less likely time for off-site strategic planning, annual budget planning, annual performance reviews, new product launches or new systems launches.
Those cyclical events are difficult to conduct in the summer because in any given week, key members will be on vacation so group events are impossible to plan. And, that is the only slowdown you will experience in your job search: that the lead time needed to bring you in for a number of interviews will stretch out from one week to three weeks.
Other than that factor, there is no reason your summer cannot be highly productive for your job search campaign.
