If you are considering starting a job search in September … don’t wait. An effective job search requires several weeks of planning, preparation and positioning; as well as research and reflection. If you start now, when Labor Day hits, you will already be actively executing your marketing campaign and will be several weeks ahead of your competition who wrongly assumed the summer could not be a productive time to be proactive in a job search.
One way to be proactive is to start re-establishing your network. Don’t yet involve your network in your job search, you first need to define your goals and value proposition. But you can prime the pump by imagining it is Christmas in July.
Christmas in July!?! The beauty of Christmas gift-giving, if you have learned that it is truly better to give than receive, is that your eyes are always open to match new books, CDs, electronic gizmos, etc. to the people in your life. My Dad, who just had his 85th birthday, fortunately wants for nothing but I have already identified what I am buying for him for his 86th birthday. Once you know what someone enjoys, it is not difficult to imagine other similar items they will enjoy.
So spend the remaining weeks of summer doing your reading with eye to which articles would be of interest to people in your network. Almost all online periodicals make it easy to send an article by email right from the site. If your news comes from other sources – radio, TV, newspapers or magazines, you can always find a link to the program or article by searching by the topic. Then you copy the link into an email. What do you say? For a friend who is a neuroscientist I just wrote one line: “Mike: Heard an interesting interview on NPR with a neuroscientist (hyperlink). I thought you would find it interesting. Time for a dinner date? –Mark”.
This simple, thoughtful approach of offering something the individual will value (the secret of gift-giving) will “warm up” your network so that when your job search goals are defined and you are ready to launch post-Labor Day, you will feel comfortable going back to your network for the information and contacts you will need for a successful job search campaign.
